History of Suncorp Super Netball
Officially unveiled in 2017, Suncorp Super Netball (SSN) took over from the ANZ Championship as the premier professional netball league in Australia. Netball Australia established the league to furnish the sport with a wholly domestic, high-performance stage and to drive the expansion of elite women’s sport across the nation.
🏁 Origins:
Until 2017, Australian netball teams took part in the ANZ Championship (2008–2016), a trans-Tasman tournament against their New Zealand counterparts.
That year, the two nations went their separate ways, with Australia introducing Suncorp Super Netball and New Zealand inaugurating the ANZ Premiership.
League Format
In its inaugural season, SSN showcased eight Australian franchises, a blend of longstanding established teams and brand-new franchises:
- Melbourne Vixens
- NSW Swifts
- Queensland Firebirds
- West Coast Fever
- GIANTS Netball (new)
- Collingwood Magpies (new; disbanded 2023)
- Adelaide Thunderbirds
- Sunshine Coast Lightning
In 2024, the league welcomed the Melbourne Mavericks — the replacement for the disbanded Collingwood.
