Melbourne Football Community Mourns Diogo Jota After Tragic Car Crash in Spain
Liverpool star forward and favorite in Melbourne, Diogo Jota, died a tragic death following a car haul in Spain just weeks after the victorious season of the premier league and a few days after his wedding.
Early Thursday morning, both Jota (28) and his brother, Andre Silva, were killed in the A-52 highway in Zamora, Spain. The cause was substantiated by the Spanish police (Guardia Civil), and it happened because of a burst tyre during overtaking when their car went out of the road and ignited in flames.
This devastating news has shaken the football loving community of Melbourne, where Liverpool has a following of millions and Jota used to be one of the household names amongst the EPL followers.

🇦🇺 A Shocking Loss for Melbourne’s EPL Faithful
Diogo Jota has been a household name in pubs, clubs and local leagues over the last few years at Melbourne and even among the Liverpool FC fans. It did not matter whether you stayed up and watched him score a hat-trick against Atalanta at 4am AEST, whether you were wearing his jersey in local five-a-side or displaying it proudly in your bedroom, the skill and energy of Jota were admired massively.
“I remember waking up early just to watch Jota play. He was relentless and gave us so many unforgettable moments,” says Marco, a lifelong Liverpool fan from Brunswick.
CBD sports bars are not the only ones paying their respects, with suburban footy clubs in Dandenong, Footscray and Box Hill starting to pay their respects as well.
